The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been an icon since the late 70's. With its utilitarian looks and boxy proportions, it was originally used as a no frills military vehicle. With the SUV boom in the 90's, Mercedes-Benz gave it a refresh, adding a luxurious interior and a range of powerful engines to make them more suitable to modern roads. However, their suspension and looks barely changed from those original and humble military origins and as a result, it's on road manners were barely acceptable by modern standards. Last year, Mercedes-Benz released its most overhauled G-Class model since being sold to the public in the United States. For 2020, the modernized G-class carries over from 2019, with the exception of new wheel size options and the ability to further customize the vehicle using the Mercedes-Benz G manufaktur program.
The Mercedes G-Class comes in three different trim levels to match their engines. The G550 is powered by a 4.0L Twin turbo V8 making 416 horsepower which it sends to all-four wheels via the 9-speed automatic transmission. This combination is enough to get the G-Class to 60 miles per hour in just 5.6 seconds, making the boxy SUV incredibly and surprisingly quick. For those wanting comical levels of power, Mercedes has owners covered and then some. The AMG G63 has a 4.0L V8 twin turbo engine making 577 horsepower, it's mated to a 9-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels.
With such a high base price, standard features on the G550 are abundant. The G550 comes with 19-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, adaptive LED headlights, keyless start, rain sensing wipers, leather seating surfaces, power heated front seats, a power sliding sunroof, 3-zone climate control, an electrically heated windshield, heated mirrors, a 12.3-inch screen with Mercedes' COMAND system and navigation, hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, a Burmester surround sound system, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. Being a fully modern vehicle, the G550 also comes standard with a blind spot assist system, active lane keeping assist systems, active brake assist with autonomous emergency braking, driver attention assist, a rearview camera, an active parking assistant, trailer sway control (and a trailer hitch) as well as a start/stop system to save a little on fuel.
In order to upstage its less powerful sibling, the AMG model comes standard with a choice of various Nappa leather interiors, one of several premium wood interior trims, 10-way power adjustable front seats with heating, 590-watt sixteen speaker sound system, voice activated controls and 20-inch wheels.
